Description

Dalton, Michael. Officium Vicecomitum: The Office and Authoritie of Sherifs. London: Printed for the Companie of Stationers, 1623.

Primarily famous in his time and today for his treatise for local magistrates and justices of the peace, The Countrey Justice (1618), Michael Dalton (1564–1644) also authored this work, Officium Vicecomitum, or, The Office and Authoritie of Sherifs, despite his never having served as sheriff. Like his earlier work, this handbook became a standard authority on its subject, appearing in an abridged version in 1628 and multiple editions up to the early 18th century. A 1666 act of the Virginia General Assembly named Dalton’s treatise as one of the books courts were required to purchase, indicating the extent of its influence.
