Description
Jackson, Robert H. The Case against the Nazi War Criminals: Opening Statement for the United States of America. New York: A.A. Knopf, 1946.
After WWII, the Allied powers came together to form the International Military Tribunal, the first international war crimes tribunal in history. Each of the four Allied nations appointed a judge and a prosecution team to try leaders from the defeated Nazi Germany for the atrocities they committed. Twenty-four individuals and six Nazi organizations were tried between Nov. 1945 and Oct. 1946. The charges included crimes against peace, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and conspiracy to commit these crimes. Twelve subsequent trials conducted before U.S. military tribunals were held in Nuremberg between 1946-49. In total, 199 defendants were tried, 161 were convicted, and 37 were sentenced to death.
