Captain John Carson was married to a beautiful young woman named Ann Carson when he left on a sailing trip to China. After he did not return for years, he was thought to have been lost at sea. Ann remarried Lieutenant Richard Smith. Shortly after this, John Carson returned. After some strife, Smith shot John Carson who died from his injuries. Smith was arrested and convicted of murder while Ann Carson was acquitted. Smith was sentenced to death. Ann made many attempts to save him, including various kidnapping plots. She was eventually arrested for planning to kidnap the governor of Pennsylvania. Smith was executed in 1816, and Ann was imprisoned.
