Description
Austin, George Lowell. History of Massachusetts. Boston, Mass.: B.B. Russell, 1884.
The History of Massachusetts details the history of the commonwealth from its earliest days as a British colony through the American Revolution and into the American Civil War. Massachusetts was the site of many battles early in American history. This treatise covers many well-known and lesser-known conflicts. The illustration displays a scene from the Pequot War, thought to be the first official conflict between Native Americans and colonists. This conflict was between the Pequot Indians and Massachusetts colonists. Austin lauds the war for striking terror into the hearts of the “savages” and securing what he felt was peace.
