Description
The Trial of Daniel McFarland: for the Shooting of Albert D. Richardson, the Alleged Seducer of His Wife. New York: W.E. Hilton, 1870.
In November 1869, a 36-year-old journalist named Albert Richardson walked into the Tribune offices in New York's Printing House Square, where Daniel McFarland, a lawyer and unsuccessful entrepreneur, shot him. Richardson was romantically involved with Abby Sage, McFarland’s ex-wife, who had obtained a divorce only weeks before the shooting after suffering years of his drunken abuse. McFarland had attacked Richardson two years earlier, shooting him in the thigh. This time, the shot was fatal. Sage and Richardson had a bedside wedding ceremony before he died. McFarland was indicted for murder. His defense argued that McFarland was suffering from insanity after losing his wife to another man. The jury pronounced McFarland not guilty.
