Robert Gates, chancellor of William & Mary, served as the 22nd Secretary of Defense (2006-2011). Gates has served presidents across both parties and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. He began his career at the Central Intelligence Agency in 1966 and is the only career officer in the history of the CIA to rise from entry-level employee to director. Gates addressed this copy of his memoir to William & Mary law students.
