Description
This inscription was written by Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood and advocate for birth control in the early twentieth century. Sanger opened birth control clinics and distributed information about oral contraceptives, believing they could end the cycle of women’s poverty. Woman and the New Race reflects Sanger’s complicated legacy. Throughout her career, Sanger engaged with the eugenics movement. This text argued for the “wise limitation of human output,” mirroring eugenic desires to limit the ability to procreate to certain people with “desirable” traits. Sanger dedicated the inscription to Richard Doherty, head of the Bureau of Catholic Charities in St. Paul.
