    Description

"Presented to the Library by Mr. Robert W. Hughes 1933"

Robert William Hughes was a Virginia lawyer, newspaper editor, and judge. He served as editor of the Richmond Examiner during the Civil War, but became a Republican during Reconstruction. Ulysses S. Grant nominated him to the position of judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He served on the court from 1874 to 1898. William & Mary conferred an honorary doctor of laws degree on Hughes in 1881. Possibly as a result, Hughes donated a number of books now held in the Wolf Law Library’s special collections.
