    Description

Sandra Day O’Connor spent her early career in Arizona in private practice and state politics, becoming the first woman to serve as majority leader of any state senate. In 1981, Ronald Reagan appointed her to the U.S. Supreme Court making her the first female Supreme Court Justice. She also served as Chancellor of William & Mary from 2005 to 2012. After her retirement from the Court in 2006, she wrote two children’s books, including Chico. Chico tells the story of six-year-old Sandra riding her favorite pony, Chico, on her family ranch. When checking on a newborn calf, Sandra encounters a rattlesnake and a sudden storm. Chico is a story of bravery and self-reliance, to which O’Connor attributed her success in her judicial career.
