Description
J. Edgar Hoover led the FBI from 1924 through 1972. In one of the first actions of his career, Hoover led the “Palmer raids,” attacks in 1920 on alleged communists--without search or arrest warrants--that resulted in mass arrests and 556 deportations. He subsequently shaped his career around eliminating radical communist “threats” from the United States. Between 1956 and 1971, J. Edgar Hoover used COINTELPRO to disrupt and discredit leaders of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. In this text, Hoover framed communism as an infiltrating threat to the United States, building his ability to position all left-leaning political dissent as threatening to the fabric of the nation.
