Description
"Given by Thos. Jefferson to D. Carr, 1806. / Tazewell Taylor 1842"
As the large bookplate indicates, this volume once belonged to George Wythe. When Wythe died, Thomas Jefferson inherited his friend and mentor’s library. Jefferson sorted through the books, choosing to keep some for himself and giving others to family members. He gave most of the law books, including the set of Coke’s Reports to his nephew, Dabney Carr hence the inscription “Given by Thos. Jefferson to D. Carr 18[06].” Some time after Carr’s death in 1837 the volume came into the collection of Tazewell Taylor, a former William & Mary student (ca. 1827) and college bursar from 1850 to 1875.
