Description

Finch, Henry. Nomotexnia; Cestascavoir, Un Description del Common Leys Dangleterre Solonque les Rules del Art. London: Printed for the Societie of Stationers, 1613.

Sir Henry Finch (c.1558 – 1625) entered Gray’s Inn in the 1580s, around which time he composed Nomotexnia, a short treatise in Law French calling for reform of English common law along Mosaic lines. After holding a series of prominent positions in the city of Canterbury, Finch’s public profile receded, likely due to domestic and financial difficulties. In 1613 Finch published a new edition of his treatise under a longer title (roughly translated as A Description of the Common Laws of England According to the Rules of Art), enlarging his original work greatly but omitting overt references to Mosaic law. Although Finch’s systematic and analytical approach proved influential, the work was never reprinted.
