Description

Broke, Robert. La Graunde Abridgement. London: in aedibus Richardi Tottell, 1576.

Sir Robert Broke (d.1558) was a judge, legal writer and Speaker of the House of Commons. Brooke's chief claim to fame, La Graunde Abridgement, was published posthumously in 1573 by printer Richard Tottell. This edition, a smaller reprint of the first, followed in 1576. Primarily derived from the Year Books and supplemented with Broke’s own case reports and other sources, this abridgement contained over 20,000 entries in Law French and was considered easier to use than the earlier but more extensive standard abridgement by Sir Anthony Fitzherbert.
