James Muscoe Matthews's (1822-1905) Digest (1861) was arranged to parallel the sections of the Virginia Code. It was updated from previous versions - which were arranged alphabetically - to incorporate this new structure and to include new case law. Topics covered in Matthews's work are crimes, punishments, criminal procedure, and the governor's authority in criminal cases.
