Representative Professional Activities and Achievements

Evan Criddle is Ernest W. Goodrich Professor and serves as Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development. His research and teaching interests include public international law, international legal theory, human rights, refugee and asylum law, immigration law, administrative law, and fiduciary law.

Professor Criddle's recent research explores legal aspects of international cooperation, refugee protection, and the right to self-determination. His scholarship has appeared in dozens of journals and edited collections, including the American Journal of International Law, Cornell Law Review, European Journal of International Law, Georgetown Law Journal, Human Rights Quarterly, Legal Theory, Northwestern University Law Review, Texas Law Review, and Yale Journal of International Law. Professor Criddle's latest book, Mandatory Cooperation Under International Law (with Evan Fox-Decent) has been published with Cambridge University Press. Other titles include: Fiduciaries of Humanity: How International Law Constitutes Authority (Oxford University Press) (with Evan Fox-Decent), Human Rights in Emergencies (Cambridge University Press) (editor), and the Oxford Handbook of Fiduciary Law (Oxford University Press) (co-edited with Robert H. Sitkoff & Paul B. Miller). Professor Criddle's research has received generous support from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council and has been cited by the supreme courts of Canada and the United States.

Professor Criddle received his J.D. from Yale Law School, where he served as Essays Editor of the Yale Law Journal and Articles Editor of the Yale Journal of International Law. Following law school, he clerked for the Honorable J. Clifford Wallace of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He then spent several years at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP in New York representing foreign sovereigns, multinational corporations, and political refugees. Prior to joining William & Mary, Professor Criddle taught at the Syracuse University College of Law.
