<p><strong>Josiah William Smith</strong> (1816-1887) was an English barrister, judge, and prolific legal scholar. He was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn and later appointed to Queen's Counsel. His <em>Manual of Equity Jurisprudence</em> (1845) was written to provide students and practitioners with a comprehensive textbook on equity principles. The work outlines the foundation of courts in equity, then discusses remedial equity, executive equity, adjustive equity, protective equity, and auxiliary equity.</p>
