James P. Whyte, Jr. began teaching at the Marshall-Wythe School of Law in 1958. He served as the acting dean from 1969-1970 and was appointed dean in 1970, serving in this capacity until 1975. He received a A.B. from Bucknell University in 1943, a M.A. from Syracuse University in 1948, and a LL.B. from the University of Colorado in 1951. After receiving his LL.B. Whyte practiced law in Oklahoma and Missouri. While at William & Mary, Whyte sat on the Editorial Advisory Committee of the John Marshall Papers.
