Davis, Jefferson. The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, vol. 1. New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1881.

Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) was President of the Confederacy. He began as a military cadet, then a Senator who served as the Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce. After the American Civil War, he was imprisoned at Fort Monroe but never tried, and was released in 1867.

Davis wrote a two-volume reflection on his wartime experiences in The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government. Davis uses the book to promote the false narrative that the American Civil War was fought solely for states’ rights, the myth of the Lost Cause of the Confederacy. The image displayed is of his chiefs-of-staff, another instance of the glorification of war from Davis.
