Gibbon, Edward. The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1883.

This six-volume work by Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) traces Western civilization from the height of the empire through the fall of Byzantium, and many conflicts and conquests in between. While the work is best-known as a critique of religion, there are also commentaries on war. The works are a study in conflict, strife, and later stability through political, religious, and military means. Every volume has the theme of conflict running through it – from the high proportion of military to citizens under Didius Julianus through the multiple Crusades and wars in Europe to maintain a Holy Roman Empire, the work reminds the reader that the Roman Empire, in all forms, was founded through conquest and war.
