Thomson, H. Byerley. The Laws of War Affecting Commerce and Shipping. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1854.

Henry William Byerley Thomson (1822-1867) was the 12th Queen’s Advocate of Cylon, a position now known as the Attorney General of Sri Lanka. His legal practice specialized in international and military law. In the preface to the second edition, Thomson highlights the usefulness and “favourable reception” of the text and promises a second part regarding Laws of War specifically for the military and administration of countries. Thomson highlights the difficulty of international law and highlights the role of maritime tribunals as the only governing bodies of international law. The text emphasizes “true principles of right and justice” and integrity when dealing with international law and war.
