Reports on the Committee on the Conduct of the War: Fort Pillow Massacre. Returned Prisoners.

United States Congress Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War. “In the Senate of the United States. May 5, 1864…: Report of Sub-Committee.” 1864.

This report is a special sub-committee report from the Joint Committee regarding the Fort Pillow massacre. On April 12, 1864, Confederate Major General Forrest led an attack against Fort Pillow and killed more than 200 African American Union soldiers who were attempting to surrender. An investigation into the battle was conducted immediately and published in this report. Senator Benjamin Wade (Committee Chair) and Representative Daniel Gooch interviewed fifty witnesses and concluded a massacre had occurred. This is often noted as one of the saddest and cruelest instances of American history.
