As a reaction to increased Eastern European immigration, white middle-class Americans in the late nineteenth century sought connections with colonial and revolutionary period ancestors. Women's hereditary patriotic organizations were on the forefront of this movement, and restored the homes of historical figures. In 1898, the American Flag House and Betsy Ross Memorial Association raised money to purchase the Betsy Ross House. This book is Weaver's fundraising effort for the purchase. She boasts of "a family relationship" to Ross in the preface, legitimizing her authorship and connection to the nationalistic history she seeks to present.
