<p>This is volume one of Beveridge's classic biography of John Marshall. On display here is a drawing of his wife, Mary Ambler. Nicknamed "Polly," she was born in 1766. She is remembered as shy and frequently ill, but also intelligent and a charming conversationalist. Marshall called her "the companion of my retired hours" and frequently asked her advice. However, none of her letters survive today. Her duties included supervising child-rearing and household labor, which was performed by the Black people enslaved by the Marshall family. Following her death in 1831, Marshall wore a locket containing a lock of her hair.</p>
