Peck, James. We Who Would Not Kill. New York: Lyle Stuart, 1958.

James Peck (1914-1993) was an anti-war activist who was arrested for nonviolent resistance and refusal to serve in World War II. We Who Would Not Kill is a memoir of his time serving a three-year prison sentence in Danbury Correctional Institution in Connecticut. Peck “was convinced that a second world war was coming, and [he] knew that when it did, [he] would refuse to kill…[he] knew that [his] action and that of other [conscientious objectors] would not stop the war” (12). The book explains Peck’s experiences in the prison during World War II and highlights his stance against violence, a stance he maintained for the entirety of his life.
