<p>The League of Nations was an intergovernmental organization founded in 1920 at the end of World War I. Its purpose was to maintain world peace and the status quo after the war. The United States and President Wilson were instrumental to the discussions that ultimately created the League, but there was resistance within the United States government to formally joining as a member. President Taft (1857-1930) (the only person to have served as both President of the United States and a Supreme Court Justice) aggregated a set of documents and annotations on the League, chronicling its formation and purposes, to convince the American people to join the League.</p>
