<p>Founders of the United States justified the American Revolution in various writings and speeches that promoted Enlightenment ideals. Following the successful defeat of the British once again in the War of 1812, Niles was inspired to publish this collection of various revolutionary speeches, opinion pieces, and other documents. He writes in the introduction “the leading object of this volume was to shew the feelings that prevailed in the revolution.” Works demonstrate both secular and religious views, debate rights of citizens, and compare democracy and monarchy.</p>
