<p>This is the arbitration proceedings records between the United States and Great Britain regarding the CSS Alabama and other Confederate ships built by Great Britain. The United States claimed that Great Britain’s construction of Confederate ships created a violation of their vow of neutrality. Five arbitrators met in Geneva and determined that the cost of pursuit by the United States of the Confederate cruisers was not “properly distinguishable from the general expenses of the war” and so no monetary indemnity was awarded, but the United States was awarded $15,500,000 in gold due to noted violations of neutrality.</p>
