Matthews, James M. Digest of the Laws of Virginia of a Criminal Nature. 3rd ed., revised and enlarged. Richmond: J. W. Randolph & English, 1890.

James Muscoe Matthews's (1822-1905) Digest was arranged to parallel the sections of the Virginia Code. It was updated from previous versions - which were arranged alphabetically - to incorporate this new structure and to include new case law. Topics covered in Matthews's work are crimes, punishments, criminal procedure, and the governor's authority in criminal cases.
